Colorful Nokia Asha 502 leaks out in a press image

A week after the Nokia Asha 500 emerged, another member of the Finnish manufacturer also made an unscheduled appearance. The Nokia Asha 502 leaked out in a press image, showcasing is attractively designed body in six different colors.
Unsurprisingly, the Nokia Asha 502 looks a lot like the Asha 500. The 502 however sports a camera with an LED flash. The Nokia Asha 500 has to do without one.
There’s no word on the specs of the Nokia Asha 502. Dual-SIM functionality and Wi-Fi are unsurprisingly present. The Nokia Asha software platform which we experienced in our Asha 501 review also appears to have been refreshed.
The Nokia Asha 502 is expected to break cover next month, on October 22 at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. The event will be quite interesting, as Nokia is expected to unveil six new devices, including a Lumia phablet and Windows RT tablet.

Camera samples from 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020 (EOS) surface

Joe Belfiore, manager at Microsoft's Windows Phone division, has posted several samples which contain EXIF data identifying the device used as the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Lumia 1020 camera samples
The Lumia 1020, which leaked numerous times by its codename Nokia EOS, has since been identified by numerous sources as the Lumia 1020, a sequel to Nokia's current Windows Phone flagship, the Lumia 920. It may or may not have the PureView suffix attached to it, to liken it to the first Nokia model sporting PureView, the Nokia 808 PureView.
The first sample has a resolution of 2947 x 1658 pixels (~5MP), while the other is 2352 x 1568 pixels (3.7MP), but as we know the first PureView camera produced samples of similar resolution in its native supersampling mode.
The Lumia 1020 is expected to be announced by Nokia on July 11 at the #ZoomParty event in New York. Be sure to check back with us then for all the juicy details.

Nokia Lumia 1020 leaked press image reveals a trio of colors

A few days after we saw it wearing AT&T livery, the Nokia Lumia 1020 appeared in yet another press image. This time around, the Windows Phone 8 imaging powerhouse appeared free of carrier branding, and showcasing three colors - white, black, and yellow.
Alongside the leaked press image, some fresh details about the handset's specs emerged, including its much talked about camera unit. The latter promises to be a smartphone photographer's dream when the handset goes official.
Reportedly, the 41MP camera unit of the Nokia Lumia 1020 will be capable of simultaneously capturing 32MP and 5MP images with 16:9 ratio, as well as a 38MP ones with 4:3 aspect. The 5MP image will be oversampled by combining seven pixels into one "super pixel." The camera will unsurprisingly feature optical image stabilization (OIS) and F2.2 aperture.
The Pro Camera app which left us wondering last time will bring proper enthusiast settings to the user. They include the option to manually tweak ISO, white balance, focus, shutter speed, and the flash settings.
Further leaked specs for the Nokia Lumia 1020 included never before seen on WP handset 2GB of RAM, 32GB of non-expandable storage, NFC, FM radio, flip to silence gesture, and optional wireless charging.
Nokia Lumia 1020 is allegedly expected to hit AT&T's shelves by the end of this month. No details have been spilled on international availability.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 will break cover this coming Thursday in New York City. We will be covering the event live from the spot, so be sure to tune in for the full scoop on the smartphone.

Latest Nokia Lumia 925 ad shows an iPhone 5 turning people into flash zombies

The recently released Nokia Lumia 925, which is basically a Lumia 920 in a new thinner and lighter shell, but also a supposedly improved camera lens. The last bit is probably why Nokia chose to focus on the imaging capabilities of its new flagship in its latest ad video.
Featuring a bunch of zombies, we have to admit the promo clip is quite cool.
The new Lumia 925 ad makes fun of the zombie faces (white faces and red eyes) that other smartphones’ flashes cause in low light. Good thing that the Lumia 925 itself has OIS, so it doesn’t always need to activate the flash. Now the benefits of the OIS for shooting low-light portraits are dubious, as the technology is better suited for other tasks, but that’s not the point here.
Enjoy the video!
You can check our preview of the Nokia Lumia 925 right here.

Windows Store glitch allows non-Lumia smartphones to download Nokia-exclusive apps

Unquestionably, the exclusive apps are part of the charm of the Nokia smartphones, over their WP8 competitors. As you would imagine apps such as Nokia Drive, Nokia Here Maps and Nokia Music are unavailable for owners of non-Nokia smartphones running Microsoft’s OS. Up until now.
WPDang has found a simple exploit giving users access to all Nokia WP8 applications in the Microsoft Windows Store. While a bit risky, the hack include routing your traffic through a Chinese proxy server, which fools the Windows Store into thinking your smartphone is Lumia-branded.
Here’s the full description below.
  1. Ensure your device has no Wi-Fi or mobile data connection switched on.
  2. Close Windows Phone Store app – including background processes.
  3. Assign APN proxy for your primary WiFi connection: 117.135.139.179, port 8888. (Tap the connected network to edit its properties, select “enable proxy”).
  4. Connect via the WiFi proxy, open up Windows Phone Store, search for Lumia-exclusive apps by name. You now be able to find the Nokia-exclusive apps but do not download at this point, just click on app description.
  5. Switch back to your WiFi settings, remove the proxy and return to the Windows Phone Store to download.
Naturally, we suspect Nokia and Microsoft are going to promptly issue a patch that’ll fix this, so swiftly try it if you are interested. Keep in mind though, that sending all your traffic through a proxy you know nothing about might jeopardize your privacy.

Nokia puts 200 Lumia 820 units together to make an impressive video wall

Nokia may have just snatched a Guinness record away from Sony – for the video wall made up of most smartphones. Using 200 Nokia Lumia 820 phones, Nokia Developer Champion Rudy Huyn created the installation and showcased it at the Microsoft BUILD conference. Sony’s wall was made up of 196 Xperia ZL phones.
The phones were arranged in 8 rows of 25 phones and were all controlled from a single Lumia phone. Together, they showed an animated display of live tiles for a selection of Windows Phone apps and also an interactive map with Bing Maps.
You can check out a cool GIF animation of the video wall over at Nokia Conversations (was it shot with the Cinemagraph lens?). Anyway, you can also check out this video of an early test using a random assortment of 28 Windows Phone handsets.
If you want to see the installation live then you better hurry – today is BUILD’s last day. Attendees can visit the game section of the ‘Big Room’ where the installation is located. There’s no mention of a Guinness record though, I wonder what that’s about.

The Nokia Asha 501 gets a new promo video

To capitalize on its global rollout on June 24, Nokia has launched a new TV ad for its latest featurephone, the Nokia Asha 501.
Perhaps the most eye-catching aspect of the Asha 501 is its numerous garish color schemes, which Nokia shows off in their latest ad. We can’t help but get reminded of those old iPod commercials – except in color.
Undoubtedly, Nokia hopes to garner as much attention as possible to its budget-range Asha platform, which is doing great at keeping it afloat until Windows Phone gathers more traction.
Be sure to check back with us soon, as the our review on the Asha 501 is just around the corner! Meanwhile, take a look at our hands-on.

The Nokia Lumia 925 is tough enough to have a cameo in the new Man of Steel trailer

The Internet loves making memes about how tough Nokia phones are and the trailer for the upcoming Man of Steel movie will just add fuel to that fire. The trailer (“presented by Nokia”) shows a quick peek of the Nokia Lumia 925, which as you may have heard will come in a limited Superman edition.
The trailer shows astounding amounts of destruction (the movie is directed by Zack Snyder of 300 and Watchmen fame, what did you expect). Check it out after the break.
Did you notice how big the Nokia logo on the phone is? It’s not that big in real life. It doesn’t glow either.
The movie, Man of Steel, is coming out on June 14. The Nokia Lumia 925, phone of Ste… aluminum and polycarbonate is coming out in June too, although it’s not clear when the limited edition will launch.

Nokia Lumia 928 vs Galaxy S4 impromptu flash shootout: xenon vs. LED

While preparing the full review of the Nokia Lumia 928, we were quite curious what its Xenon flash is capable of. We had a Samsung Galaxy S4 around so we decided to do an impromptu shootout in low light conditions. We’ve prepared a set of samples from both devices for you to see, both with and without flash under the same conditions.
The entire marketing blitz surrounding the Nokia Lumia 928 has been built around its camera’s low light prowess. The samples we are about to show you now are not about that (or at least, not entirely).
With OIS built-in, the device surely commands plenty of attention, but now we are concentrating on the flash performance of the two models. Hit the break to see how they fared.
We are not going to pass a final verdict on the flash performance of the Nokia Lumia 928 just yet – we are still conducting tests of its performance. We are yet to take lots of camera samples to be able to discern how good of a job the Xenon flash does. Please consider this a work in progress.
And no, we don’t intend to turn this into a cameraphone shootout, it’s just what it is – a set of comparative flash camera samples, which we though you’d be interested in.

Nokia Lumia 928: Flash OFF / Flash ON • Flash OFF / Flash ON (no mistake in the order)

Samsung Galaxy S4: Flash OFF / Flash ON • Flash OFF / Flash ON
We will have the full review of the Nokia Lumia 928 up very soon.

Over 80% of Windows Phone devices made by Nokia

The latest report from Adduplex reveals that as of May 2013, some 80.2% of global Windows Phone devices are made by Nokia.
The bulk of the shares come at the expense of Samsung, who has largely moved away from Windows Phone in the past several quarters.
As far as which Nokia devices are the most popular, the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 710, and Lumia 800 collectively combine for over 35% of the Windows Phone landscape.
As far as OS version breakdown, Windows Phone 8 was almost able to overtake WP7 devices, but fell just shy at 49.4% market share when compared to the older operating system.
Finally, Adduplex identified several “mystery” devices which showed up numerous times in their results, the most prominent being the Lumia 928, which just saw tits public release, and the Samsung SPH-I800, which is likely a variant of the ATIV S for Sprint in the US. There were also a few Nokia devices coming out of Asia as well.

Nokia Lumia 925 goes on sale, hits Germany first

Almost a month after its announcement, the Lumia 925 has gone on sale.
The Nokia Lumia 925 will start its roll-out in in Europe with a debut in Germany. Vodafone is one of the carriers there to carry the aluminum Lumia 925 by the end of June. The next European countries to follow will be Italy, Spain and the UK. O2 has already confirmed it will be adding the new Nokia flagship to its arsenal in Britain. The rest of the countries in Europe should follow soon afterwards.
With Europe covered, Nokia will be focusing on Chinese, where it will release the Lumia 925T - a version of the 925 made specifically for the region. Then, the Lumia 925 is planned to be available in the US for T-Mobile. "Other markets worldwide" should follow in the coming months.
As far as pricing is concerned, the Lumia 925 is expected to retail for €470 in Europe before taxes or subsidies and around $600 in the US. Carriers should announce the on-contract prices in the coming weeks, too.
